Everyone’s got an opinion about art, particularly contemporary pieces that may push the boundaries of what you consider “artistic.” Yasmina Reza’s 1994 play, ART, returns to Broadway with an all-star cast, including Bobby Cannavale, James Corden, and Neil Patrick Harris.
The three actors portray a trifecta of friends who debate, dismantle, and decimate one’s decision to buy an exceedingly expensive piece of art: a white canvas with three slashes. Perhaps that’s where Banksy conceived the idea to shred his own work on the auction block in 2018? (Make sure you’re sitting. “Love is in the Bin” sold for $1.4 million when the original stunt unfolded at a Sotheby’s event. The work was resold several years later for a staggering $24.5 million.)
But back to the play… ART will open on September 16 at the Music Box Theatre, featuring direction by Scott Ellis for a limited run through December 1, 2025.
“Ever since I first saw the original production, it has been etched into my mind as a hysterical and moving portrayal of friendship, compromise, and the power of art to change perspectives,” said producer Michael Shulman.
Like Banksy’s work, let’s see if it holds up.
