Don’t cry for me Argentina! Jamie Lloyd’s hotly anticipated revival of Evita starring Rachel Zegler has announced casting for the production’s other pivotal role, Che. Enter Diego Andres Rodriguez, currently appearing on Broadway in Lloyd’s Sunset Boulevard starring Nicole Scherzinger.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be making my West End debut in Evita this summer at the historic London Palladium!” exclaimed Rodriguez in a statement. “Being directed by Jamie Lloyd again, working with The Jamie Lloyd Company’s incredible team, and playing ‘Che’ opposite Rachel is an opportunity of a lifetime. This is a dream come true!”
The production runs June 14 through September 6, and if you’re under 30 years old (or a “key worker” or “those receiving government benefits,” 5,000 tickets will be available for £25 throughout the run.
1MC takeaway: Lloyd previously directed Evita at London’s outdoor Regent Park in 2019. Can we expect a similar production? From the looks of the trailer, it gave us The Will Rogers Follies vibes with all those stairs. Zegler just appeared on Broadway opposite Kit Connor in Romeo + Juliet, and we know she can sing from her turn as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake. But does she have LuPone pipes?
