New World Stages, the midtown hub for Off-Broadway theater, prepares to welcome a new resident with the arrival of Rolling Thunder, a new live concert-documentary about the Vietnam War. First produced in Australia, the New York premiere arrives at a particularly poignant time, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, as well as current tensions in Ukraine and throughout the Middle East.
Featuring a cast of five, Rolling Thunder explores the complicated factors leading up to the war, its impact on soldiers and families, anti-war protests, and the civil rights movement that called for peace through songs from the 1960s and ’70s.
The score showcases a who’s who of the era’s musical changemakers, including songs written and made famous by Paul Simon, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield, and others.
