“Here’s to us! Who’s like us? Damn few!” — Merrily We Roll Along
Stephen Sondheim, who would have turned 95 on March 22, is resurrected on Broadway, once again—this time with a cast of theater royalty breathing new life into his canon. Led by Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga, along with an ensemble of diverse character actors, Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends promises a musical theater mélange, including songs from Gypsy, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company, Follies, and more.
IMC takeaway: Do we need more Sondheim? Like we need air—Yes. Broadway already is boasting a revival of Gypsy starring Audra McDonald this season, while London’s National Theatre prepares to welcome Here We Are, (Sondheim’s last, unfinished work) this summer. But why settle for one Sondheim when you can have a pu pu platter? Will the material land with as much punch as it it would in the context of the shows? If anyone’s up for the task, it’s this cast of Broadway veterans.
