A revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance might not have been on everyone’s Broadway wish list, but Roundabout Theatre Company promises a “shipload of musical comedy delights” in a new production of the 1879 comic opera.
Now set in New Orleans with new orchestrations by Joseph Joubert and Daryl Waters, Pirates! hopes to deliver a jazzy rendition of the tongue-twister classic. Notable casting includes Ramin Karimloo (Pirate King), Jinkx Monsoon (Ruth), and David Hyde Pierce (Gilbert/Major General Stanley). Warren Carlyle choreographs and Scott Ellis directs with an opening scheduled for April 23.
Will this ship sink or sail? If history is any indication, audiences are ready. The Roundabout reimagining marks Pirates!‘ 27th time on Broadway!
