It’s been more than a decade since the short-lived TV show Smash bedazzled theater fans with its small screen antics and bigger-than-life production numbers. We knew it was only a matter of time before the musical migrated to Broadway … and as Stephen Sondheim once wrote, here we are.

The odds are looking good with director Susan Stroman (The Producers) and choreographer Joshua Bergasse (who choreographed the original series) at the helm, along with a cast of Broadway veterans, including Robyn Hurder (Moulin Rouge)—a role originated by Megan Hilty, who’s now appearing in Death Becomes Her.

The glitz. The glamour. The drama. Who doesn’t love a backstage story, especially when the show-within-a-show is about Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe? Will Smash knock it out of the park? There’s steep competition this season for new musicals, with quirky hits like Maybe Happy Ending and Operation Mincemeat appealing to audiences. Here’s a first look:

First look of ‘Don’t Forget Me’

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this trailer featuring Robyn Hurder belting out “Don’t Forget Me” is the musical theater version of Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. We can’t wait to get lost in this performance!

Smash is playing at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. Opening night is scheduled for April 10, 2025, with tickets on sale through January 4, 2026.
