Calling all shelter dogs! Goodspeed Musicals searches for its next Sandy

There’s a role opening up in Connecticut this fall, and the lead doesn’t need a headshot — just a wagging tail and a good temperament.

Goodspeed Musicals has launched a national Search for Sandy, a nationwide casting call for shelter dogs to fill the iconic role of Annie’s loyal companion in its 50th Anniversary production of Annie. The production will run October 30 through December 27 at The Goodspeed in East Haddam, Connecticut. The selected dog won’t just perform the role; they’ll be adopted by renowned animal trainer William Berloni and live out their days at his Connecticut home.

The winner gets the role and a furever home

Berloni found and trained the original Sandy for Goodspeed’s world premiere production of Annie back in 1976, which eventually transferred to Broadway and won seven Tony Awards. His return for this golden anniversary is a full-circle moment that reconnects the show to its roots in shelter adoption. Nearly six million dogs and cats enter the shelter system each year.

Shelters interested in nominating a dog can submit candidates at goodspeed.org/search-for-sandy. The ideal Sandy is a mixed-breed, medium-sized, beige-ish dog—most importantly, outgoing, intelligent, and extremely friendly. Submissions receive responses within a few days.

While only one lucky dog will land the gig, hopefully plenty of homes will open their doors and give a new furry buddy their own starring role.

Tickets for Annie are available at goodspeed.org.
