We spend a lot of time thinking about what’s worth your attention. And that goes for books as much as any performance or art exhibit. Welcome to 1MC’s latest curated book recommendations: five categories, thirty titles, refreshed every season, and always linked to independent booksellers through Bookshop.org.
Three of this season’s curated book recommendations are worth an extra tote for your day at the beach. Ann Patchett’s newest novel, Whistler, reunites a woman with the stepfather she lost touch with at nine, after a chance encounter at the Met. Quieter territory than Bel Canto, and some of the strongest reviews of her career.

It wants better content.
Laverne Cox’s memoir, Transcendent, landed earlier this month, with appearances throughout the summer to promote the new title. The book traces the years before Orange Is the New Black, when survival looked nothing like the life most people now associate with her.
And Tim Weil’s Making Rent arrives 30 years after he sat behind the piano as Rent‘s music director, with Jonathan Larson’s score still being shaped that close to opening night. A rare account of one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century, told by someone who was in the room where it happened.
